Pop giants – Back to the 90s!

It is the colorful, poppy, carefree decade that we all say: awesome times!

The 90s are the last decade without social media, without complete accessibility or mobile phone service, and musically more diverse than ever before.

Boy bands exist alongside grunge and techno. With Eurodance, Germany takes on the pioneering role at the top of the charts for the first time internationally, and hip hop arrives from America in Swabian living rooms.

In the music documentary “Pop giants – Back to the 90s!” we celebrate the “good old days” that still seem so close to us. Buffalos, Tamagotchis and tribal tattoos tell of a carefree attitude that is so lacking today.

And that is precisely why the 90s are booming. Sold-out concerts and 90s shows can be found up and down the country. We still accompany successful artists who became big stars in the 90s - sometimes right up to the edge of the stage of their currently celebrated performances.

But in 1994 nobody would have thought that "Scooter" would be around for long. "Hyper Hyper" was long decried as fairground techno. Today, Scooter have been successful and cult for 30 years! Frontman HP takes us backstage, where he still warms up with techno as loudly as possible.

Bastiaan Ragas from the boy band "Caught in the Act" invites us to his home in the Netherlands. With "Love is everywhere", he and the three other members of "CITA" were the tangible and attainable dream of girls in the 90s. They were on the cover of BRAVO a total of 23 times. The successful author, musical performer and actor tells us in an exclusive interview how he remembers the time in the rain of cuddly toys with crop tops (for the boys too!). .

"Mr. President" were the epitome of Eurodance with "Coco Jambo". While Lay Zee still performs under the band name, T-Seven alias Judith Buthmann occasionally hosts one of the sold-out 90s concert shows with up to 20,000 visitors and is otherwise a horse trainer. What is her view of then and now? Haddaway also tells us about his view of Eurodance. Does his "What is love" belong to it? And what does successful producer Alex Christensen say about the 90s revival. His project was called U96 and he became immortal with "Das Boot". Something that DJ BoBo also achieved. The Swiss brought the Eurodance formula MaRaFraSi to perfection. Man raps, woman sings and that paired with an incomparable show is still the successful concept of his celebrated performances today.

In addition to techno, boy and girl groups and Eurodance, hip hop became huge in the 90s. In 1997, rapper Sabrina Setlur ended the male dominance of the genre and became the first German female rapper with a number 1 in the charts. Does she miss the 90s? The greatest German rappers also take us on an exclusive journey through time. In 1992, "Die da" saw "Die Fantastischen Vier" top the charts. Today they sell out stadiums. How do they remember the "good old days"?

All of our experts and artists help us with memories. They bring the 90s back to life with their knowledge and their very own personal anecdotes. Alex Gernandt (ex-BRAVO) and Anastasia Zampounidis (ex-MTV) are also there. The production company behind the "Pop Giganten" series is Maxi Media GmbH from Cologne, which specializes in high-quality music documentaries.
